Flip Flops.

Posted in Penny Circular at 11:24 AM by Myles

Tonight’s the last night my of the first block of 2nd shift at work for me. On Monday, I’ll be on 1st shift for two weeks. This block of testing reminds me of working at the shipyard in Bremerton, WA; we had the same two-week flip-flop between 1st ad 2nd shift that we’re doing here. Luckily, the stretch here is only two months long [so far].

Hopefully my sleeping will improve for the next couple weeks. However, it has been interesting and good to encounter those more nocturnal than I’ve been the past while.

Deadly Than The Mail.

Posted in Telling Stories at 8:54 AM by Myles

Around Wednesday morning, I received word that an expected package would likely arrive in the regular mail that day. I leave the screen door wide open so that the Post Officer would know I’m home — and so I would hear him call out or knock.

…Skipping the part you can figure out …

The note said it’d be available for pickup Thursday — which is fine and all, except that Thursday was 15-April. Meet the ground between Death & Christmas: Tax Day at the Post Office. I decide that waiting a day wouldn’t hurt.

On the way into work [2nd shift] slightly early, I change my mind and decide to round the corner to check out the Post Office. What do you know — parking spaces. I poke my head in the door — what do you know, only five people in line. Well hey — a Post Officer asking me if I’m picking up mail, letting me be served whilst still in line.

Seven minutes, tops, to pick up a package at the Post Office on 15-April. Thank you, My Stars.

With A Chance Of Rain.

I’ve never understood why someone would want to have copies of their email stored on their own computer. Besides the evil of M$: Outlook [which I must use at work]… to me, the whole point of email is being connected; to other people, to a network, &c. If your network’s down, then your email [in/out going] can wait — and you and your associates can pick up the phone if no one wants to knock on anyone’s door.

“But my email is my reference for important information!”

Sure, me too. But if it’s something you’re referring to regularly and/or for something critical — do you trust your network connection that much? I do, when I own and control the network and its connection. When I don’t control or own the network or its connection to my computer(s)… you want me to trust the Admin, the weather, the recent software upgrade? Um, no. I’ll save what I need to refer to and keep the email stored online.

“But that’s what saving email on your computer does!”

Do you really want to go through all that preamble, confusing paragraph structure and unclear wording each time you need to refer to something? Not everyone explains something clearly, and not necessarily in one email either [remember follow-up questions?]. Read the email(s), format it so you understand it yourself and save the [new] document on your computer. Keep the email(s), sure — but when the deadline’s tomorrow and the network’s down until Sunday and your coworkers are on vacation in Siberia…

The real issue here is Privacy vs “The Cloud”. Do you trust Multi-Vac, or Multi-Vac’s controllers, to not track, read, censor, share your private e-communications?

If you’re that paranoid, use those pre-paid messenger pigeons; I do, when the need arises.

There are always options, so don’t buy that hair dye or wig until you need them — and save the stress and hair-pulling.

Slow, relaxing, productive weekend — rain included.

Tomorrow I start a 2-week stint on second shift. Horray for slightly more money. At work, I’ve been experimenting with a full hour for lunch — and hope to continue this experiment with dinner whilst on second shift.

I have a new batch of stuff to sell on eBay in the works. The pictures have already been taken and edited, leaving the actual text of the ads to be written up. Though it’s a decent amount of work to do, it’s still something to do in all the things on my “to do” list [the contents of which is to distract me from rest of the contents, per usual]. It’ll be interesting to see what I end up posting, or donating, or whatever.

What I did accomplish this weekend was a batch of scanning I realized I may not have had to do. However, it feels good to be able to safely dump and/or shred a whole bunch of paper when I get into work tomorrow.

Life continues…

Death & Resurrection In The Age Of Obama.

Posted in Telling Stories at 6:43 PM by Myles

By some calendars, today is Easter.

By most calendars, today is an anniversary of when MLK Jr. was assassinated.

I haven’t experienced a convergence like this since around 2003; I miss being on the radio for days like this.

For some, a dream deferred. For others, a dream realized yet bittersweet. The colours just happened to be switched.

“You Have To Be Memorable.”

I don’t shave every day. This habit became pronounced during my recent time of unemployment, but I have been making effort toward a more reasonable shaving timetable since becoming married and re-employed — every other weekday and not on weekends, for example.

I did not shave on Thursday or Friday [this] morning [I'm still making that effort, do note].

Eyeglasses are vision-changing. This may seem obvious, but it’s not until you try it. “Wow, High-Def!” was very much my reaction upon my first pair of glasses [as confirmed by Tom], despite my pre-glasses bias and inexplicable parental denial [thank God for Vision Insurance and a motivation for Self Improvement].

I take my glasses off during haircuts, for semi-obvious reasons.

During my haircut today [my first since oh-so-long-ago Oktober '09], I spotted myself in the far-off mirror. Though I knew it was myself I was observing, it was not “me” I was seeing. In my place, due to the uncorrected state of my natural vision and my unshaven state and mid-cut hairstyle, I instead saw the shadow of a rather evil person reflected back at me. I had flashes of the Marvel series “Earth X”, amongst various Rammstein songs and biographical movies.

This was one of those moments I enjoyed with myself while it was happening, as I suspect not very many people would understand. I am very much not in the Nazi mindset, so go no further in your state of being [constantly] enraged in this “issue”. I am merely commenting on what my uncorrected vision showed me during a routine procedure; one of those “movie moments” [for good or evil] one lives for if they know what to do with themselves. For example, if you dream you’re the Anti-Christ, yet are a devout Atheist, should you feel inherently disturbed after you wake up? My answer is “no”, since you know what you believe in and would treat the experience as an intellectual and interesting situation.

But then again, I did see a recent political cartoon indicating that the Pope would play in the Masters to divert attention away from the most currently reported Catholic sex scandal.
